Whether at school or at work, 선배 (senior) and 후배 (junior) are important to Koreans.
In the military, they are called 선임병 (senior soldiers) and 후임병 (successors). This conceptual relationship plays an important role in almost every organization, including schools and workplaces.
Seniors are those who joined the organization earlier than their juniors.

Juniors should be polite to their seniors and use honorifics. Usually, the word 님 (nim) is added after the seniors to indicate respect like 선배님 (seonbaenim).
Seniors should be exemplary to juniors. Sometimes, seniors buy lunch or dinner for juniors.

The military culture in Korea is the result of the combination of the military experience of most Korean men with the traditional Confucian culture of Korea. Many of these cultures are disappearing today. But sometimes you may experience this culture.
