I have an appointment with a Korean friend. What is the culture of paying for meals? How about sharing money with friends? Should I tip the restaurant staff?

There are two main ways to pay for meals after eating with several people.

If several people ate together, there is a way to pay for the meals that are given by taking turns one by one. For example, today person A pays all the money, and next time person B pays all the meals. This method can be used mainly when you are eating with someone you want to get close to. It is also mainly used in socially different positions, for example when teachers and students eat. Or, often one person makes a lot of money, or if there is an organizer in this meeting, that person pays the full meal. These methods may vary by age group, which is primarily the culture of people over 40.

The second is to pay for each meal. For example, if 3 people ate food for 30,000 won, the total amount is divided by the number of people and each one pays little by little. If you divide the total amount of 30,000 won by 3 people, it becomes 10,000, so you can pay 10,000 won each. This method is mainly used with friends and colleagues. This is primarily the culture of people in their 20s and 30s. Of course, people in their 40s and over are also increasingly paying for meals in this way these days.

In restaurants, you don't have to tip. There is very little tipping culture in Korea as well as in restaurants. You can pay the bill after meals. In most restaurants, meals are paid directly by card or cash to the restaurant owner or restaurant staff waiting at the front desk when walking out after eating.
