10월 9일은 한글날입니다.
한글날은 한글의 우수성을 널리 알리고 세종대왕이 훈민정음을 반포한 것을 기념하기 위한 날입니다. 대한민국에서는 10월 9일을 한글날로 정하여 태극기를 게양하며, 공휴일로 지정되어 있습니다. 《세종실록》에는 1446년(세종 28년) 음력 9월에 세종대왕이 훈민정음을 반포한 것으로 쓰여 있습니다. 이를 근거로 1926년 지금 한글 학회의 전신인 조선어연구회와 신민사가 당시 음력 9월의 마지막 날인 음력 9월 29일(양력 11월 4일)에 훈민정음 반포 여덟 회갑(480년)을 기념하는 행사를 가졌습니다. 그러다가 국어학자인 주시경이 1906년에 제안했던 ‘한글’이라는 이름을 붙여서 1928년부터는 ‘한글날’로 명명했습니다.
세종대왕과 그의 학자들이 약 550년 전에 만든 한글은 한국어를 기록하는 문자 체계입니다. 한글의 자음은 사람의 입 모양을 본떠서 만들 문자입니다. 전세계적으로 누가, 왜, 어떻게 만들었는지 알려진 유일한 문자 체계입니다.

October 9th is Hangeul Day.
Hangeul Day is a day to promote the excellence of Hangeul and commemorate King Sejong's promulgation of Hunminjeongeum. In Korea, the 9th of October is designated as Hangeul Day and the Taegeukgi is hoisted, and it is designated as a public holiday. In the Annals of Sejong, it is written that King Sejong the Great promulgated Hunminjeongeum in the ninth month of the lunar calendar in 1446 (the 28th year of King Sejong). Based on this, in 1926, the Korean Language Research Society and Shinminsa, the predecessors of the Hangeul Society, held an event to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the publication of Hunminjeongeum (480 years) on September 29th (November 4th) of the lunar calendar, the last day of September in the lunar calendar.
